Further evidence of the continued growth of KLN Family Brands: Tuffy’s Pet Food has bought more land.

At a special meeting in September, the Perham City Council rezoned and sold property to Tuffy’s for additional truck and trailer parking.

Two currently empty parcels along 3rd Street N.E., just west of the intersection with 450th Ave., have been rezoned from “open” to “light industrial” to accommodate the parking.

Councilors agreed to sell one of the two parcels to Tuffy’s, and grant the company the right of first refusal on the other parcel. A 1.44-acre parcel was sold to Tuffy’s for $12,400, which covers half the cost of a land survey done on the property.

A public hearing previously held on the rezoning garnered no public response.

A memo to city councilors from the Perham Planning Commission explained that the existing Tuffy’s truck parking lot in the Industrial Park was no longer meeting all of the company’s needs. Tuffy’s has been storing some of its trailers in Detroit Lakes and then transporting them to Perham when needed, creating unnecessary cost for the company.

The new lot will improve this situation, but is still not entirely ideal. According to discussion at the council meeting, the current truck route will be an issue for drivers trying to connect between Tuffy’s and the new parking lot. Since 3rd St. N.E. is not considered a truck route between 7th Ave. and 6th Ave., trucks will need to detour south and then back north to connect.

In addition, 3rd St. is a gravel road that will likely need some additional maintenance if truck traffic increases.

Tuffy’s plans to have the lot lighted to allow for nighttime trailer dropping.
