The Turtle Lady
She's the Perham "Turtle Lady," and she is known worldwide.
There's nothing cold-blooded or reptilian about Lynn Henderson's turtles. These are warm-blooded critters, soft, fuzzy and colorful, and she's created and sold nearly 2,000 over the past 22 years.
A professional sewer, Henderson sews everything from aircraft covers...to turtles...at her Rush Lake area shop.
"The turtles are my hobby," said Henderson, who sets up her display at each turtle race of the season in Perham.
Her multi-colored turtles have been sold to people from all around the world.
In 2007, for example, she sold 850 of the stuffed animals.
"I was a 4-H leader for 47 years, so I like kids," said Henderson. "This is a way to visit with kids from all across the country."
One youngster, visiting Perham from Japan, took home four.
Another family has nearly 30 of the stuffed turtles. At least one different turtle has been purchased every year that the family has vacationed in the area, said Henderson.
The "Turtle Lady" will be on duty again during Turtle Fest, June 18-21, in Perham.
Turtle races will be every day through Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. during the festival.
