Turtle Races begin next week
Turtles, start your engines.
Perham’s 2014 International Turtle Races start next week, kicking off another summer of fun, kid-friendly competitions.
The races are held every Wednesday in Perham in June, July and August. They’re held downtown, at Turtle Park, starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins a half-hour earlier, at 10 a.m.
Always a favorite activity for kids and families, the Turtle Races attract visitors from all over the globe, including right here in Perham. Past race winners have included residents of Germany, Australia, Canada, Ireland and beyond, as well as nearly every state in the U.S.
The races began in 1978 as a way for the local police department to develop a better relationship with area youth. That first event was such a hit, the community decided to keep it going.
Now, 37 years later, the races have grown into a beloved and celebrated annual tradition in Perham. They’re held every week, rain or shine (in some cases of storms or downpours, they may be cancelled).
There are turtles on site for kids to borrow, or they may bring their own.
