Two Vergas residents hurt in accident

Two people were injured in an accident near Vergas yesterday morning.

Torey Sonnenberg, age 36, of Vergas, was parked in an approach along Highway 17 when his vehicle was rear-ended by a pickup truck driven by Doreen Richard, 68, also of Vergas, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard tried to avoid hitting Sonnenberg’s vehicle, but a collision occurred. Authorities said she may have been blinded by the sun. After striking the other vehicle, Richard crossed the eastbound lane, swerved back into the other lane and went down a steep embankment.

Richard had to be extricated from her pickup and was transported to a hospital in Detroit Lakes. The extent of her injuries was unknown on Wednesday. Sonnenberg suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

Vergas Rescue and Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
