UPDATE: Boaters died of carbon monoxide poisoning on Lake of the Woods, autopsy says

Two men found dead in a boat on Lake of the Woods died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, according to preliminary autopsy results.

The victims were identified by the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office as Lonnie Ray Norberg, 44, of Champlin, and Jeffrey Edward Wheeler, 35, also of Champlin.

The investigation indicates that a faulty exhaust system may be the cause of high levels of carbon monoxide, according to Sheriff Gary Fish.

A third man, Christopher Andrew Klick, 43, of Crystal, survived and remains hospitalized at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D.

The incident was reported about 11:30 p.m. Sunday near Birch Beach, north of Williams, according to the sheriff’s department.

Authorities discovered the bodies of Norberg and Wheeler. Klick was transported by Lake of the Woods Ambulance to LakeWood Health Center in Baudette, Minn.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continues to assist with the investigation.

Lake of the Woods is a popular fishing lake that straddles the U.S.-Canadian border in northwest Minnesota.

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two men who were found in a boat on Lake of the Woods late Sunday night.

The incident was reported at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday near Birch Bay, north of Williams, Minn., according to the Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities discovered the bodies of two men, ages 44 and 35.

A third victim, a 43-year-old man, was transported by Lake of the Woods Ambulance to LakeWood Health Center in Baudette.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the sheriff’s department.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.

No other information was immediately available from police.

However, a report from PageOne Publications and the Northern Light newspaper in Baudette indicated the men were aboard a 25-foot Baja Cruisers boat that apparently floated to shore. Eyewitness accounts indicate the cover was off the engine compartment when it came to shore.
