A man sustained serious injuries after a train collided with a truck Thursday afternoon outside of Perham.

Gary W. Frieler, 48, of Lake Park, Minn. was traveling southbound on 425th Ave. around 4 p.m. when he stopped his truck on the railroad tracks and was hit by a train on the driver's side of the vehicle, according to Otter Tail County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Schreader.

The impact of the collision caused the 2009 Chevy Silverado to flip once, landing on its wheels near the track, according to a sheriff's office report.

Schreader said reports from the conductor indicate the man was leaning over into the passenger's seat of his Ford at the time of the crash. Reports also indicate the man would have had plenty of time to see a train coming in his direction.

The man was conscious when he was extricated from the vehicle, Schreader said, and was transported to Perham Memorial Hospital, where he was taken by Life Flight Helicopter to a Fargo hospital.

It is not yet known if a medical condition was to blame for the man's standstill on the tracks.
