Upgrades to affect library services
Viking Library System, headquartered in Fergus Falls, will be upgrading its Horizon library system Aug. 14, 15 and 16.
The upgrade will require the shutting down of the library catalog, circulation system, patron iPads and access to the popular downloadable ebooks and audiobooks at the Perham Area and New York Mills public libraries during that time.
"Local member libraries throughout the system will remain open and library patrons will be able to check out and return books as always, however, catalog searching and ebooks / audiobooks will be unavailable," according to VLS Director Peg Werner.
The upgrade is necessary to both replace aging database servers and to upgrade the Horizon software in order to keep the system running well into the future. Most of the software upgrades will benefit the librarians' ability to search for and track materials for library patrons, however, some of the glitches that library users have reported will also be fixed in this upgrade.
Internet access will not be affected. In addition to upgrading the hardware and software that runs the library catalogs, VLS is also upgrading broadband access.
