Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son

Violet Bentilla

Funeral services will be held for Violet Bentilla of New York Mills, MN on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills with Pastor Don Salo officiating. The music will be provided by the congregation, accompanied by Janet Tumberg. Special music will be provided by Andy and Janet Tumberg. The pallbearers will be Larry Bentilla, Jack Bentilla, Michael  Cragg, Edwin Niemela, Raymond Niemela and George Becker. Violet will be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills. 

Violet V. (Niemela) Bentilla was born on November 6, 1919 in New York Mills to Charles and Esther (Carlund) Niemela. Violet was united in marriage to Ralph Raymond Bentilla in  1940 in Verndale, MN. Their marriage was blessed with six children. From 1941 to 1947 Violet and Ralph resided in Valparaiso, Indiana and Aurora, Illinois, where Ralph worked for the McGill Company. They moved to Minneapolis, MN where Ralph was employed with Utilities Services Company.  Violet was employed with Leef Brothers in Minneapolis. They retired in 1976 and returned to New York Mills in 1978. On December 23, 1999, Ralph passed away at the Elders' Home in New York Mills. Voilet was an avid Twins fan and loved to play cards, work crossword puzzles and visit with her family and friends. She was an excellent cook and had a green thumb when it came to gardening and flowers. On June 9, 2009, Violet passed away at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, ND.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Preceding Violet in death were her parents; her husband, Ralph; sons, Steve Bentilla and Dennis Bentilla; siblings, Eleanor Daiens, Arnold Niemela, Ruth Randall, Pearl Snabb, Howard Niemela; and her special friend, Edna Perala. 

Violet is survived by her children, Sandra (Michael) Cragg of Maple Grove, Larry (Patricia) Bentilla of Duluth, Jack Bentilla of New York Mills and Cathy Bentilla of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren, Christine, Rebecca, Richard, Jennifer, Noel, Anne, Lynn, Richard and Bob; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Snabb of South Haven; Anna (George) Becker of Garrison; brothers, John Niemela of Minneapolis; Raymond (Janell) Niemela of Clearwater, Edwin (Sharon) Niemela of Harris; dear friends, Elaine Lanska of East Bethel, Jerry and Joanie Salo, Leroy and Diane Nelson, Darlene Zosel, Pastor Don and Vi Salo, all of New York Mills; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.  

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills.
