Perham won by scores of 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 25-21, and down to nail-biting time in the final set, which the Yellowjackets pulled out 15-13.

Maria Rutten continues to be the lead attacker on the Yellowjacket side of the net. She, along with Tina Scheidecker, led the team both with career highs of 12 kills.

Allie Christenson also set a career high with 27 assists.

"What an exciting match," Head Coach Dan Christenson said. "Every set was competitive. It was a great one for the fans to watch. A career night for many of the Jackets tonight."

Scheidecker added 15 digs, along with 14 from Tina Schmitz.

Miranda Lockhart and Analea Erickson had three blocks each.

Perham traveled to the Southwest Minnesota Challenge, the largest volleyball tournament in the state, hosted by top-ranked Marshall over the weekend and came back an improved team.

"Much improved serve receive, passing, setting, and hitting contributed to (the) victory tonight," Christenson said. "I was proud of the guts the kids showed tonight. They never gave up, and it paid off in the end."

Perham went 1-4 in five matches at the Marshall tournament.

The Yellowjackets lost to Hopkins, Champlin Park and Tartan by scores of 2-0. Russel-Tyler-Ruthton defeated Perham 2-1. The lone victory was against Yellow Medicine East 2-0.

Including tournament play, Perham has a record of 3-6. The Jackets are 1-0 in the Heart O' Lakes Conference.

That record will get a test as Perham travels to Barnesville (3-1).

The Trojans are receiving votes in the Class A poll and sit just outside the top 10.

Perham and Barnesville meet Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Barnesville.

Another weekend tournament follows that game, beginning Saturday, at Minnewaska.
