Wadena-Deer Creek scores win over D-G-F in section volleyball semifinal
PERHAM, Minn. - Two weeks ago, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton handed a five-set loss to Wadena-Deer Creek in the Wolverines' volleyball regular-season finale.
The two teams met again on Tuesday. This time, the Wolverines ended the Rebels' season and extended theirs.
Wadena-Deer Creek swept Dilworth-Glyndon Felton 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 in the Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 semifinals at Perham Middle School.
"I'm really happy we won it 3-0," W-DC head coach Sue Volkmann said. "I am just happy we won the match. D-G-F is a great team. It is great to move on."
W-DC advances to the section championship match, where it will play Thief River Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday in Bagley, Minn.
Seniors Emily Miron and Caitlin Volkmann paced the Wolverines the entire match. Miron posted 24 kills and 11 blocks while Caitlin Volkmann finished with 12 kills, three blocks and 30 digs for W-DC (22-8).
"Those are our top two hitters," Sue Volkmann said. "Emily is 6-foot-2 and can get up on the block. She had an outstanding day. They couldn't stop her when she was sliding and she just set the tone for us."
After the tight five-set match earlier this month, the sweep on Tuesday wasn't a surprise for Miron.
"Our goal with this match was to beat them in three," Miron said.
The Rebels were able to mount small rallies in the opening two sets, but the comebacks never came to full fruition.
Large deficits in the opening two sets were also to blame for the Rebels woes.
"We would just get stuck in a couple serve receives," D-G-F head coach Tessa Tysver said. "It would be runs of five, six, seven points, and against a good team like that, you can't let runs like that happen."
While the Rebels struggled to get in a groove on offense, the Wolverines were able to take advantage.
Junior setter Heather Theisen was able to pass the ball to a number of W-DC hitters with pinpoint accuracy. Theisen finished with 39 assists.
"Heather did a great job getting the ball to all of our hitters," Miron said. "Our hitters did a great job of pulling the block for the other hitters to get the kill."
D-G-F finishes the season 21-7.
Senior outside hitter Kinzie Molstre paced the Rebels with 10 kills and a block. Hannah Young added nine kills, a block and an ace serve for D-G-F.
W-DC senior outside hitter Melissa Moenkedick finished with two kills and eight blocks.
WDC (kills-blocks-aces): Miron 24-11-0, Volkmann 12-3-0 (30 digs), Maas 6-0-0, Moenkedick 2-8-0, Post 1-3-0, Theisen 0-0-0 (39 assists).
DGF: Bentow 4-0-0, Young 9-1-1, Highness 3-5-0, Molstre 10-1-0, Mercil 4-0-1 (28 assists), Senske 5-6-0, Bjerke 0-0-0 (20 digs).
