Prior to his judgeship, Hanson was a partner for 27 years at Anderson, Larson, Hanson and Saunders Law Firm in Willmar. He lives in Willmar with his wife Deb and they have three grown children.

Growing up in Wadena, Hanson was a three-sport athlete, an Eagle Scout and was involved in theater and student government. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead and William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.
