The Glendalough Park Partners kick off their 13th Walk for Glendalough on Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m. at the park's trail center. This annual hiking event has raised almost $200,000 for park improvements since it started in 1996. "Walk Day" is an open house with free admission to the park, and the friends of Glendalough provide trail guides, lodge tours, eagle nest viewing, music, food and prizes.

Proceeds from this year's event will be used to renovate the trail center with new restrooms. The trail center is currently being used by the Battle Lake School for outdoor classroom activities and lacks any restroom facilities. Past walk events have funded prairie plantings, tree plantings, camper cabin heat and electricity, bird feeding stations, rental canoes, a picnic shelter, a hiking bridge, and the restoration and furnishing of the park lodge.

While you choose a route to hike, enjoy a donut and a cup of cider at the trail center. Those that can't hike can ride a park shuttle down the trail to the eagle nest, take a tour of the 100-year old Glendalough lodge, or just relax to some live music. The bratwurst lunch will be ready by 11 a.m., and the returning "Walkers" will gather at the old tennis court to hear the latest park news, the total funds raised, and, if they're lucky, choose a prize. Free posters are available to all. The event wraps up by noon, but you can always extend your day with a canoe trip, a hike to see the blooming pasque flowers, or an overnight stay in the campground.
