WCI named a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business
On Earth Day, April 22, the League of American Bicyclists recognized West Central Initiative with a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business award.
With the announcement of 80 new and renewing bicycle friendly businesses in 29 states and Washington, D.C., West Central Initiative (WCI) joins more than 650 local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the United States that are transforming the American workplace and leading the nation toward a greener future.
“Visionary business leaders are recognizing the real-time and long-term impact that a culture of bicycling can create,” said Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, in a press release. “We applaud this new round of businesses for investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their employees.”
WCI has worked closely with the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota and PartnerSHIP 4 Health to find ways to encourage the west central Minnesota region to embrace cycling as a way to improve health and decrease reliance on fuel-fed transportation.
WCI promotes cycling as an easy option for transportation for its employees and for those in the community who attend WCI meetings. A new rack was recently installed at the front of the building to accommodate more bikes.
“West Central Initiative actively seeks ways to create a healthier environment for our staff and for our visitors. By encouraging bicycling, we can encourage more physical activity, leading to better health outcomes and reduced health care costs,” said Nancy Straw, WCI’s president. “It is also a way to connect more with the community, promote a fun and healthy work culture and help decrease our carbon footprint.”
The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. Moving forward, WCI will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the league to become even more bicycle-friendly.
WCI is a regional community foundation based in Fergus Falls. It serves the nine west central Minnesota counties of Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin. Learn more at www.wcif.org.
