WDC/Perham tennis posts back-to-back wins
PERHAM — For a team that has struggled in recent years to gain more than one or two victories a season, this year’s co-op with Wadena-Deer Creek has provided opportunities to win and the Wolverines won for the second consecutive match by defeating Park Rapids 6-1 in Perham Tuesday, May 7.
The Wolverines swept all four singles matches against Park Rapids. Mike Paavola and Drew Larson continue their hot play of late both winning in blowout fashion love and one over Chris Shaw and Calvin Bateman.
Shane Perry and Austin Andreen completed the sweep. Perry won 7-5, 6-3 over Jeff Dickinson. Andreen split sets 6-2, 4-6, before winning a third-set tiebreak 10-8.
The No. 1 doubles team of Barnabus Busa and Christian Hinckley had no problems defeating the Panthers’ top duo of Jaden Olson and Jackson Kimball one and three.
Kris Henson and Mike Botzet took out Iain Wallace and Alex Boyd by identical set scores of 7-5, 7-5. Park Rapids avoided the shutout with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
Park Rapids exited their buses before the game with a load of players. The Panthers come from a tennis-friendly area where the game and plenty of courts are in use by players of all ages. Tennis in Perham has seen its ups and downs in both boys and girls programs as far as victories and participation numbers. This year’s team counts ten members, four from Wadena-Deer Creek and six from Perham with nine seniors.
Next year’s boys tennis season has a lot of holes to fill and winning can only help in attracting numbers and players to courts in both towns.
Perham defeated Minnewaska May 3 in Wadena by a score of 7-0.
