West Fargo wins thriller over Perham to open DL Water Carnival Tournament
DETROIT LAKES -- It took international rules in extra innings to decide the opening game of the Detroit Lakes Water Carnival Tournament between West Fargo and Perham.
West Fargo defeated Perham 3-2 in eight innings.
The starting pitchers dueled for seven innings each allowing a single run.
West Fargo loaded the bases in the top of the first and took a 1-0 lead on a Brock Evenson single that scored Landon Uetz.
Perham starter Jesse Hein induced a ground ball from Camran Bonnema to second baseman Dylan Ellingson, who turned the 4-6-3 double play with Chris Ruther to end the threat.
Hein retired West Fargo in order four of the next six innings.
Perham got to West Fargo starter Matt Barclay for the tying run in the fourth inning.
Eric Brauch singled and stole second base. He scored on a base hit by Ivan Nodsle to even the score 1-1.
Perham loaded the bases in the sixth inning with nobody out but Barclay got out of the jam thanks to third baseman Andy Young.
Young fielded two shots to the hot corner and gunned Brauch out a the plate for the first out.
Ellingson hit a hot shot but Young nabbed the ball, tapped the third base bag for the unassisted force, and threw to first for the inning-ending double play.
Pinch hitter Jake Still led off the Perham bottom of the seventh with a single and worked his way to third base with two out looking to end the game.
Barclay retired the last batter he faced, Brauch, with a pop out to the pitcher.
Barclay let Perham put the ball in play. He had no strikeouts, walked three, allowed one earned run in seven innings but received a no-decision.
Hein worked a complete game for Perham and pitched into the eighth inning.
International rules put the last batter out in the prior inning on second base to start play in the extra frame. Ben Huber trotted to second for West Fargo
Hein retired Jordan Rheault on a failed sac bunt that was caught by catcher Gabe Pankonin.
Uetz flied out to left field stranding Huber at second with two away.
Young came through again for West Fargo doubling to score Huber pushing the lead to 2-1.
Hein intentionally walked Bucholz to put the force outs in play at all bags.
Evenson walked to load the bases and Bonnema got a RBI the hard way hit by pitch to score Young from third base and a 3-1 lead.
Hein exited after pitching 7.2 innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on only four hits. He walked three and fanned six.
Garrett Biegler closed out the top half of the eighth facing one batter.
Bonnema took the hill for the eighth inning and got out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam to earn the victory.
Brauch took second base to start the bottom half of the inning. Nodsle walked and was replaced by pinch runner Brady Sazama. J.T. Laughlin walked to load the bases with nobody out.
Bonnema settled down and struck out Jack Stigman for the first out and the game ended on a double play at the plate.
Ellingson grounded to second base and forced out Laughlin at second. Shortstop Huber relayed to catcher Ben Bruentes at the plate and nailed Sazama by a few steps for the third out, after Brauch had scored from third to cut the lead to 3-2.
Bonnema earned the pitching victory throwing one inning. He walked two and struck out one.
The tournament is not bracketed with teams playing an assorted amount of games. West Fargo was scheduled for a 2 p.m. game against Chanhassen playing back-to-back games in near 90-degree temperatures.
Perham is off until Saturday. They will play Grafton at 4 p.m. and Crookston Sunday at 3 p.m.
