William Aho

William J. Aho, 96, of Osage, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the Frazee Care Center, Frazee.

William Jacob Aho was born to Andrew and Anna (Sandback) Aho on Aug. 11, 1911 in Toad Lake Township. He grew up and attended school in the Osage area. On June 24, 1935 he married Elvie S. Niemi in Wolf Lake Township. They lived on the home farm in rural Osage until 1942, when they moved to San Diego, Calif., where William worked for Consolidated Aircraft Company.

William then worked for the railroad, Inland Steel and Sherman Tanks in Indiana until 1943, when they returned home to their farm. He farmed until 1956, when he went to work for Hanna Mining. He worked for Hanna Mining driving a dump truck for 17 years, retiring in 1973. His wife Elvie passed away in 2002. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and playing cards.

Surviving William are his son, James (Ruth Ann) Aho of Osage; five daughters, Darlene (Roland) Pihlaja and June Crandall, both of of Osage, Carole (Brian) Biro of Asheville, N.C., Susan (Robert) Gjersvig of Detroit Lakes and Nancy (Brian) McNulty of Stillwater; 20 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Pelto of Ashland, Wis.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; son-in-law, Ivan Crandall; great grandson, Shane Pihlaja; three brothers, John, Eino and Oscar Aho; and five sisters, Ellen Kangas, Selma Suek, Lula Peterson, Lina Yoki and Ruth Sayger.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church, Wolf Lake, with the Rev. Elmer Yliniemi officiating.

Casketbearers will be Jeffrey Pihlaja, Bobby Pihlaja, James Clements, Greg Clements, Brent Gjersvig and Grant McNulty. Burial will be in Pickerel Lake Cemetery, Wolf Lake.
