The event, the first of its kind, is being held as part of National Women's Health and Fitness Week celebrations throughout the U.S.

Organized as a public/private good health partnership by the Health Information Resource Center, National Women's Health and Fitness Day will offer fitness and health events for women at community locations that include hospitals, health clubs, park and recreation departments, health departments, schools, retirement communities, houses of worship, senior centers, and others.

Local women's events held in September will include fitness walks, exercise demonstrations, health fairs and health information workshops. Most local events will include an exercise or physical activity component, as well as educational information about women's health and fitness.

One of the local organizations that will host this year is the Perham Area Community Center. The PACC will be celebrating Women's Health and Fitness Day on Sept. 26 from 8:30 a.m. - noon. Featured guest Dietician Sue Martodam will speak on "What am I REALLY eating" at 11:15 a.m. Her topic will cover grocery store shopping for healthy foods, how to read labels, marketing strategies companies use to get you to buy their products, and understanding the difference between non fat, no fat, sugar free and lite foods.

Free fitness classes start at 8:30 a.m., with booths starting at 9 a.m. for free blood pressure and glaucoma screenings, along with free body fat testing, osteoporosis risk factor screening, chair massages, and free water nitrate testing (bring 1 cup of your water in a zip lock bag), to name just a few of the events going on that day.

Everyone is welcome; the event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the PACC at 346-7222.
