BARRETT -- The top-seeded New York Mills wrestling team was bumped from Section 6A team wrestling tournament by No. 4-seeded and three-time defending Section 6A champion Border West Saturday in Barrett 38-27.

"We weighed in a lineup to win in the finals and that ended up being the difference," Eagles Head Coach Eric Niemi said. "A gamble we needed to take."

A Taylor Ericksrud 10-6 decision at 138 pounds and Maison Roberts winning by fall (1:24) at 145 pounds gave the Eagles their only lead at 15-13.

Much of the strategy in wrestling is getting the correct match-up and much of NY Mills' success at sections was centered on Michael Meyer.

According to Niemi, when NY Mills faced Border West earlier in the season Michael Meyer weighed in at 160 (he pinned at 170, wrestlers can move up one weight class).

"When the Eagles wrestled Barnesville, Meyer wrestled 152 and that is where we needed him in order to win against Barnesville," Niemi said.

Meyer matched up at 152 against Border West's Nick Stafford. Stafford came away with a 12-3 major decision pushing Border West back into the lead 17-15.

Border West won the next three matches, two by fall and a major decision making the lead 32-15.

With three matches remaining, only three pins would gain a win for the Eagles.

Tyler Patron got his at 195 pounds pinning Seth Callenius in 40 seconds.

Heavyweight Max Carlson also got a win by fall at 1:06 over Wyatt Tritz.

But in between those two matches, Bradan Krump pinned Cole Grabow at 1:31 to seal the victory for the Buccaneers.

Border West advanced to the 6A championship match against Barnesville. The Trojans earned a trip to state with a 39-27 victory.
