Wrestling: Eagles top ten of 35 teams at Big Bear

CASS LAKE -- The New York Mills wrestling team put up a top 10 finish at the Big Bear Tournament, the largest wrestling tournament in Minnesota aside from the state tourney.

No.1-A ranked Shane Novak won an 11-2 major decision in the finals at 120 pounds over Willmar's Zach Lueders for the Eagles only title.

Novak was undefeated in the two-day tournament.

After a first round bye, he defeated Thief River Falls' Tae Malone by fall at 4:00.

In the 120 semifinals, Novak won a 13-6 decision over Dylan Sauceda of Bemidji.

Hutchinson's Riley Drew lost a 9-4 decision to Novak in the semis.

The Eagles got five other top seven individual finishes.

Noah Pesola, ranked No. 6-A finished fourth at 182 pounds.

Pesola pinned Ozzie Miller of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus at 50 second of the first period in the opening round. Pesola pinned Ben Ortiz of Detroit Lakes at 24 seconds and defeated Tristan Palmer of United North Central by a 7-0 decision to advance to the semifinals.

Brady Gross of Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena, the eventual runner-up, defeated Pesola 2-1 in overtime.

Pesola's fourth place finish came on a loss to Hutchinson junior Gannon Jordahl in a tight 4-3 decision.

Pesola advanced to the third place match by defeating Gus Makowsky of Fergus Falls by fall.

Tyler Patron and Max Carlson finished fifth at 195 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Jeremiah Harper finished sixth at 113 pounds.

Kacee Skoog recorded a seventh place finish at 152 pounds.
