Wrestling: Jackets second at 12-team Sertoma Tournament
GRAND FORKS--The Perham wrestling team stormed to the championship match of the Sertoma Tournament in Grand Forks over the weekend before meeting a salty West Fargo Packers lineup. The Packers took out Perham 52-19.
"West Fargo is the real deal," Perham Head Coach Robb Moser said. "They brought an intensity that was fun to see."
Brandon Lueders, 132, Luke Sailer, 152, Cody Nylander, 220, and Jesse Hein. 285, all brought home victories in the championship match.
"It was good for us to wrestle West Fargo, as they have the style that we want to be like in the future," Moser said. "Our kids had an eye opener about intensity and commitment after wrestling them. The days of being a dominant athlete and staying out of the weight room are over."
Hein, Nylander and Ty Haverland all went undefeated in four matches at the tournament.
"Nylander had some good competition this weekend with kids that wrestle a different style than him. If he can get a little more confident in his technique, it will be tough for someone to stay with him this year."
"Hein continues to be dominant. It was great to see him get four matches. Sometime, it will catch up with us, but it seems the team expects six points out of him every time he steps out on the mat."
"Haverland had a very good tournament. He even jumped up a weight for us. Ty is the typical story of a kid who sticks with it until he is a senior and really starts to shine."
Luke Sailer was undefeated in his three matches winning all three by way of pins.
"Two of them against real salty opponents," Moser added.
Lueders had a solid weekend going 3-1 and Josh Werner, according to Moser, was dynamic when he was in there. Werner won all three matches at the tournament.
Perham's three team victories came over Turtle Mountain, Bismarck Century and Fargo North.
"Our matches with Turtle Mountain and Bismarck Century were good measuring sticks for us. Both of those teams beat us soundly last year. Turtle Mountain wrestles a much more physical style than ours. Our kids need to see that. I think that each of (our) kids improved over the weekend."
The Yellowjackets brought all wrestlers and they all got matches--some of them as many as six matches.
"There were not nearly as many forfeits as I would have expected," said Moser. "Many teams have expressed frustration over the new weights but most teams had a full lineup."
West Fargo coach Kayle Dangerud was asked what it will take to beat Preston Lehmann, the Packers' talented 182-pound wrestler.
"I don't want to think about what it's going to take for them to beat him," Dangerud said. "We want to think about what it takes for Preston to beat them."
So far, there are few answers in what it will take to beat Lehmann.
Lehmann pinned all four of his opponents in leading West Fargo to the championship of the 38th annual Sertoma Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Grand Forks Central gym.
The Packers, who have won the tournament in two of the past three years, downed Perham 52-19 in the title match -- with Lehmann picking up his fourth-straight pin during the two-day event.
In the semifinals, West Fargo downed Valley City 54-11.
That dual had some significance as Lehmann pinned Wyatt Bjornson in 66 seconds. It was the 100th pin of Lehmann's career.
"For a junior, that's pretty good," Dangerud said.
It was a solid weekend for West Fargo, the state's top-ranked team. The Packers scored 52, 53, 54 and 54 points in their duals.
"We wrestled really well and our guys competed hard," Dangerud said.
Lehmann led the way.
"For someone who wrestles him a little bit in practice, he's really good," said the West Fargo coach. "He's a leader in the room, too, and a pleasure to have in our program."
But the focus is on the team, Dangerud said.
"We have a talented team," the coach said. "Our goal is to keep outworking our competition."
Bismarck Century captured third place in the 16-team tournament, while Valley City finished fifth. Grand Forks Red River picked up seventh with its 45-29 win against Central Cass.
