Brady Sazama had the match of the night at 152 pounds. He trailed New York Mills' Kacee Skoog the entire match before pulling out a 5-2 win in the final seconds.

Skoog controlled the match riding Sazama the entire second period and heading to the final two minutes up 2-0 after a scoreless first period. The first minute of the third period belonged to Skoog, as well.

Still down 2-0, Sazama threw Skoog to his back and recorded a takedown and near fall for five points with two seconds on the clock. The referee was signaling Sazama's points as the horn sounded to end the match.

Sazama's win was a six-point swing that made the score 30-9 in favor of Perham rather than heading to what looked like 27-12 with six matches to go.

"Brady is a great kid who has overcome lots of adversity," Perham Head Coach Robb Moser said. "Huge match. Lots of guts."

Patrick Glynn pushed the score to 33-9 adding a commanding 12-5 decision over Gunner Flynn at 160 pounds.

At 170, Brian Pyle kept the Eagles alive with a feat worthy of comparison to Sazama's, if not more noteworthy.

Cole Schmitz owned Pyle for all but the final 30 seconds of the match. Down 8-4 late, Pyle stormed back with a pin at 5:55 to give New York Mills life down 33-15.

Noah Pesola kept the Eagles' momentum going at 182 pounds with a 7-1 decision over William Parks keeping the outcome in play down 33-18. Parks has had his fair share of tough matches in his career.

"William Parks is the ultimate team player-anything for the team," said Moser. "Awesome kid."

Jesse Klatt sealed the match for Perham at 195 pounds on a near fall with 43 seconds remaining in the third period breaking a four-all tie with Cole Grabow and winning the match 7-4.

"Jesse Klatt wrestled his best match of the year," said Moser.

With the score 36-18, the match was decided going to the final two heavyweight matches.

Cody Nylander did not wrestle at 220 as the Eagles forfeited. New York Mills' heavyweight Max Carlson pinned Jesse Bucholz at 1:56 to end the match 42-24.

Perham got off to a hot start with pins from Gage Paurus over Nick Hendrickx at 106 pounds. Paurus recorded the fall in 4:34. Sam Pirrotta made it two in a row for the Jackets pinning John Flynn in 52 seconds and a 12-0 early lead for the home team.

Austin Haman got Mills on the board with a 4-2 decision over Evan Guck at 120 pounds.

Defending state champion Shane Novak made quick work of Jacob Guehna in the 126-pound match. Novak led 6-2 after one period and pinned Guehna at 2:37. The score was its closest at 12-9.

Josh Werner defeated Tyler Ehnert to expand Perham's lead to 15-9 with a 6-0 shutout. Ehnert avoided a pin while on his back the entire last minute of the third period.

Luke Sailer pinned Andrew Perala at 1:56 in the 138-pound match. Perham led 21-9 and made the score 27-9 when Colin Neitzke pinned Taylor Ericksrud in 3:34 at 145 pounds.

Moser had plenty to say about his wrestlers after the match.

"Gage Paurus is improving daily-very fun to see; Evan Guck wrestled hard subbing for Chase Curtis; Josh Werner beat another state entrant; Colin (Neitzke) got a huge pin; Cole Schmitz will be fine when he gets his lungs back-he has a heckuva motor and an awesome attitude; Rico Glynn is putting together a tremendous year."

Game note: Terry Weller was recognized in a pre-match ceremony for his wrestling accomplishments and contributions to both communities. Weller was a 1982 state champion from New York Mills. Weller joined Perham's coaching staff in 1995 and coached until 2012.

"We want to recognize Terry for his commitment to the sport and certainly to the athletes of Perham," Athletic and Activities Director Fred Sailer said. "He has just a phenomenal way with people and young people and I know this, a lot of folks here tonight, Terry, came here because of you."

"Fred Sailer and the Perham Mat Club did a real neat thing for Terry Weller," Moser said. "I think it is one of the little things that makes wrestling enthusiasts a little closer than others."

"My heart's always been in Mills..." Weller said. "but I coached for Perham for 19 years and I still root for these guys. My heart will always be in New York Mills but my second family is right here and it will always be here."
