Wrestling: Shorthanded Eagles put up seven top four finishes at Grant County Tourney
BARRETT--A shortened New York Mills wrestling squad came away with top four finishes from seven wrestlers at the Grant County Tournament, led by state-ranked Shane Novak and Tyler Patron with runners-up finishes and another from Maison Roberts.
"We wrestled a good Grant County," Head Coach Eric Niemi said. "Top five with nine guys was something we can build on."
The Eagles failed to enter wrestlers from the 106, 113, 170, 182 and 285 pound weight classes, most noticeably, No. 8 ranked Noah Pesola at 182.
"We should get a more competitive lineup after Christmas break," Niemi said. "We will return a couple of starters to the lineup and have more options when we are down to weight."
Novak, coming into the tournament ranked No. 1 at 113 pounds in Class A, but has been wrestling up at 120, finished with a 3-1 record and the first runner-up place for the Eagles.
He won by fall in his first two matches--45 seconds over Action Herman of Dawson Boyd-LQPV, and at 1:15 over Bryce Nilson of Border West. Novak advanced to the finals defeating No. 3 ranked Class 2A Abbot Aho, of Fergus Falls, 3-2.
In the 120 pound final, Novak met Isaac Novacek of Greenbush/Middle River, who is the No. 1 ranked 120 pounder in Class A. Novacek won a 7-3 decision.
