Kaylan Huber, #10, and Katrina Moenkedick box out looking for a rebound on a sot by Barnesville's Jasmine Meyer. Rebounding has been one of the parts of the game the undefeated Yellowjackets need to work on.

Yellowjacket girls keep rolling

The Perham girls basketball team stayed true to form this past week winning two more games, remaining unbeaten and upping their record to 6-0.

On Tuesday, Perham hit the road to take on West Central Area. The Yellowjackets came out with a close 69-64 victory. It was the closest game Perham has played so far this season.

"It was a pretty sloppy game plagued by turnovers from both teams," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said. "We did some nice things offensively, but our defense just didn't show up tonight. West Central was aggressive going to the basket and our girls were not able to stay in front of them without fouling."

Turnovers were nearly even. Perham committed 30, while West Central lost the ball 33 times.

Katrina Moenkedick led all scorers with 23 points. She was two rebounds away from a double-double, nabbing eight boards.

Steph Miller was the only other Yellowjacket in double digits scoring 11 points. Both Moenkedick and Miller starred on the defensive end with eight and nine steals respectively.

Statistically, the game was even. Assists were 18-16 West Central. Rebounds 30-23 Perham. Points in the paint were 52-46.

But good teams find ways to win on difficult nights and the Yellowjackets did it with defense garnering 25 steals to West Central's 13, while off the bench, Perham substitutes scored 19 points to only four from the Knights' role players.

Gullingsrud noted the Yellowjackets had a lot of work ahead of them in a short amount of time to prepare for Barnesville.

Barnesville opened their season with three games at home, winning their opener against Breckenridge, but falling to state-ranked Hawley and Pelican Rapids.

The trip to Perham was their first on the road and the Yellowjackets were less than inviting.

Perham is averaging victories by over 12 points per game. That showed in an 18-point rout of Barnesville.

The Yellowjackets took command early, after a quiet first four minutes of little scoring. Perham doubled up the Trojans at halftime, 28-14, on way to an easy 53-35 victory.

"We have been working on our defense and rebounding exclusively the last two days in practice and the girls really responded in those two areas tonight."

During the first month of the season Gullingsrud has been displeased with Perham's rebounding.

Perham outrebounded the Trojans 28-21 and forced 14 turnovers.

"It was the best defense we have played so far this season and we limited Barnesville to only 4 offensive rebounds, so it was really nice to see improvement in both of those areas."

Moenkedick was held to 18 points, the first game she has failed to reach the 20-point mark.

Kaylan Huber added ten points, while Becky Stoll and Kelli Meehl both scored nine.

Huber and Moenkedick led the Jackets with six rebounds each.

"Our offense was not as sharp, but a lot of credit goes to the Barnesville defense as they made us work for everything we got."

Perham sits atop the Heart O' Lakes conference standings at 4-0. Hawley, ranked #6 in Class 2A standings, remains undefeated, as well, at 3-0. The two teams will square off in Hawley in mid-January.

Next up for Perham is the Pelican Rapids Holiday Tournament Dec. 28-29.
