Unlike last year, they did not have to do it in blizzard conditions.

In the final state rankings for the season, the boys team remains in the top spot, while the girls go to state ranked 11th.

The teams will compete at the Class A State Championships Sat., Nov. 6, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The boys will race at 10 a.m. and the girls will follow at 11 a.m.

Cassie Beseman led the way for the girls at the section meet finishing in eighth place with a time of 15:59.

"Cassie has done a real good job in leading those girls," Head Coach Jeff Morris said. "She has really stepped up."

Racole Karels, this year's Heart O' Lakes conference champion, finished in 14th place, 15 seconds behind Beseman. Both runners were named to the all-section team, which is comprised of the top 15 finishers. The top 10 racers qualify for state individually.

The boys put seven runners on the all-section team and had five runners in the top ten. Keith Schornack continues to be the lead runner for the Yellowjackets placing third at sections in a time of 16:34, just four seconds ahead of Klaus Weber at 16:38, in fifth place.

Nick Carignan was sixth at 16:50. Brandon Karels finished eighth-17:10. Brady Speicher was ninth one second later at 17:11. Dalton Dahms 12th at 17:15 and Andrew Riestenberg took 13th at 17:32.

The team titles were not close. The boys, finishing in a pack at the finish line, outdistanced second place Thief River Falls by 48 points. Perham finished with 26 points to the Prowlers' 74. Staples was a distant third place with 155 points. The top two teams qualify for state.

"That was probably one of the best section showings I've seen," Morris said. "I think Thief River should be ranked. Both teams will go down and represent our section well."

Perham and Park Rapids qualified on the girls' side with Perham besting the Panthers 84 to 102.

Not to be outdone in racing, both Yellowjacket squads also won the section academic honors with near perfect efforts in the classroom.

Both teams had the highest grade point averages in the section with the boys at 3.97 and the girls at 3.94.

Along with the team academic honors, four senior boys and one junior girl earned All-State Academic honors, which are earned by finishing Top 15 in the section along with a 3.75 G.P.A.

Keith Schornack, Klaus Weber, Brandon Karels, Andrew Riestenberg, and Cassie Beseman all earned All-State Academic.

The coaching staff even got into the award winning. Assistant Coach Brent Hanson was named Section 8A Assistant Coach of the Year.

Both boys and girls teams have finished second place in the state the past two years.
