Yellowjackets win 11th straight game, ranked 20th in latest AP poll
EAST GRAND FORKS -- The Perham baseball team, ranked No. 20 in Class 2A, hit the road to East Grand Forks and continued their winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of the Green Wave Tuesday.
Perham won by scores of 12-1 and 15-9.
Eric Brauch started game one and gave way to Brady Sazama to clean up the fifth, as both hurlers combined to limit the Green Wave to one run on two hits.
Both pitchers allowed one single in the game that was called by mercy rule after five innings.
Gabe Pankonin led Perham at the plate going 3-4, scoring twice and knocking in a run.
Jesse Hein did much of the offensive damage with four RBI. Hein was 1-3.
The Green Wave jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first, but Perham put the game away with a six-run second, a four-run third and two more runs in the fourth to clinch the opener.
The barrage on Green Wave pitching continued in game two.
Jesse Hein hit two solo home runs in the second and third inning and knocked in three runs on a four-hit performance. Perham's clean-up hitter knocked in seven runs in the two games.
Chris Ruther had three hits and a RBI, scoring twice.
Ruther pitched five solid innings, giving up two runs in the first, to get the victory. Ivan Nodsle pitched the sixth and Mark Schumacher pitched the seventh.
The Green Wave did most of their damage against the bullpen scoring three times in each of the final two innings.
Perham erased the 2-0 deficit with two more big middle innings.
The Yellowjackets scored four runs in the third and six in the fifth to jump out to a 11-2 lead, before adding four insurance runs late.
Perham improves to 13-3 overall heading into Saturday morning's doubleheader in Staples that will decide the winner of the Mid-State Conference.
Perham holds a one-game advantage at 9-1 to Staples-Motley's 8-2. The Cardinals will have to sweep to win the Mid-State. Perham can clinch with one victory.
The games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
