A youth drama camp will be held Tuesday, July 5 through Saturday, July 9 at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham.
Local youth will learn to time-travel, finding local stories and presenting them as though they were the people who lived in our area in the past.
The five-day camp begins each day at 1 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m., except on Saturday, when the camp runs from 1-7 p.m. At 7 p.m., participants will bring their characters to life by presenting them on stage and in costume.
The camp directors are Joyce Thierer and Ann Birney of the Ride Into History historical performance touring troupe. Both are members of the Kansas Alliance of Professional Historical Performers, and have been directing workshops and camps since 1997.
Birney and Thierer will convince participants that they, too, can learn and teach history through performance. Students will select a character, research that person (and their era) and learn that character's stories. Then, Birney and Thierer will also share performance ideas. Ride Into History will be able to costume most of the historical performers out of their rolling "Green Room."
As a result of the camp experience, participants will have learned and practiced reading, writing, speaking and research skills. Participants will have a better understanding of local history and their place in it. And, they will have had a great time and feel good about the service they are providing their community by keeping the stories alive.
