Zima wins Average Jo Triathlon

PERHAM — Fargo’s Tyler Zima completed the Average Jo Triathlon in the fastest time since 2006 beating out runner-up Casey Miller of Baxter by 36 seconds to win the 10th annual Average Jo Triathlon Saturday morning.

Zima completed the three events in 1:01:15. Miller finished in 1:01:51. Matt Simmons of Moorhead won the 2006 Triathlon nipping the hour mark with a time of 59:20.

Cheryl Rosentreter of Geneva, Ill., was the top female finisher in 24th place overall with a time of 1:13.08. Kaylea Brase of Circle Pines finished second in a time of 1:14.24.

Derek Dahms was the top finisher from Perham with a 10th place finish of 1:08.49.

Other Perham residents completing the triathlon were:

Ben Olson in 35th place (1:17.35); Luke Hofland in 68th place (1:28.12); John Muszynski in 86th place (1:33.54).

Hofland recorded the fastest time in the swimming portion of 4:25 over the .3 mile race.

The top two finishers duked it out all race. Runner-up Miller (31.14) was was second to Zima on the bike. Zima had the fastest 12-mile time of 28:58, the only racer to complete the bike in less than a half hour.

Miller gave Zima all he could handle in the four-mile run with the fastest time 23.26. Zima was fifth-fastest in 25.44. Zima was 20th in the swim (5.25); Miller 28th just four seconds back at 5:29.

Bob Koshnick of Detroit Lakes won the 60 and over division as the race’s most experienced participant in a time of 1:28.41. Koshnick, at 70-years-young, finished one place below his numeric measure in 69th place overall.

In the three-person team race, the Anderson family of Kelby, Tag and Camie won in a time of 1:07.23 besting 10 other teams for the victory.

The competition attracted 112 registered participants and 11 teams from multiple states.

Thayne Brunsvold made the longest trek, all the way from West Palm Beach, Fla.
