ITOW Museum to offer free civil war lecture

The In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum in Perham will present a lecture about the Civil War on Friday, June 17 at 7 p.m.

The lecture is the second in the summer lecture series called "History, Heritage and Hope." Ryan D.G. Stout will be the featured speaker. His lecture is entitled "The Ironclads: The Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in the Civil War."

The Battle of Hampton Roads, often called the Battle of Monitor and Merrimack, was a naval battle of the Civil War, famous for being the first fight between two ironclad warships. The naval battle lasted two days and received worldwide publicity.

Afterwards, it was clear that ironclad ships were the future of naval warfare. 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and provides a fresh opportunity for a new generation to rediscover the many ways in which the war - "this mighty scourge," as Lincoln described it - changed life for all Americans.

Ryan Stout is pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New York Mills. He is an avid historian with a particular interest in the Civil War era.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The ITOW Veterans Museum is located at 805 West Main, Perham. For more information call 218-346-7678 or visit
