High water causes Phelps Mill Festival to make some changes

FOCUS File This year, the Phelps Mill Festival will change up its layout to minimize potential damage to the park, which is still a wet area due to high water.

Another staple of summertime in East Otter Tail County is right around the corner. The Phelps Mill Festival will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 9, and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 10.

This year, due to high water, the Phelps Mill County Park is a very wet area, according to park officials. In order to preserve the park and not cause any damage to the park grounds, the Phelps Mill Country Board decided to host the festival on the tarred areas around the park.

The festival brings together artists and artisans who display a high quality of work presented in a balanced variety of mediums under the beautiful backdrop of Phelps Mill. This year, more than 150 artists are registered for the festival.

There will be a pancake breakfast starting on Saturday at 8 a.m. Following the breakfast is the Boy Scout Troop 305 Color Guard. Festival Manager Teresa Brause is scheduled to make introductions at 11:50 a.m.

Music starts at noon with Ring of Kerry, an Irish band. Gary Wick will take the stage at 1:15 p.m., followed by Ring of Kerry again at 2:45 p.m., and Wick will close out the day's events at 4 p.m.

Sunday, July 11 will begin with another pancake breakfast, with the Boy Scout Troop 305 Color Guard to shortly follow. At 11 a.m. the Community Service Speaker will start things off, with music provided by Paul Imholte.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jane's Travelling Turtles will be holding turtle races. Registration starts a half hour before the start of the race.

At 12:30 p.m. the Okee Dokee Brothers will perform, followed by the Connie Lee Show at 1:45 p.m.

There will also be plenty of food options available, as well as a children's activity area opening at 9:30 a.m. both days.
