'Our Lives, Our Stories' back on the road again

The traveling exhibit, "Our Lives, Our Stories: America's Greatest Generation" is packed up and ready to ship to the West Baton Rouge Museum in Louisiana.

The exhibit was on display at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham from Sept. 1 through Oct. 20. During that time there were more than 1,300 walk-in visitors plus docent-led tours of an additional 1,100 visitors including nine school groups totaling about 800 students.

Visitors that signed the guest book hailed from as far away as Australia.

The National Endowment for the Humanities encouraged public programming that would expand on the themes of the exhibit and 10 events were held during that time. World War II Marine Paul Ceynowa's walk-through of the battle of Iwo Jima was one of the highlights. Ceynowa gave his talk twice to a rapt audience.

A supplemental exhibit was created by the local museum with posters and stories of WWII veterans who came from the Perham area and that portion of the exhibit will stay up through Veteran's Day (Nov. 11).

"Our Lives, Our Stories: America's Greatest Generation" has been organized by the Minnesota Historical Society and is being toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance and NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Local sponsors and volunteers helped make this event possible.
