FROZEN FEST: Icy plunge, frigid run, ice fishing fun slated for full-day event
Freezing has never been this fun.
What started as a one-event display of winter insanity-a "polar plunge" into Little Pine Lake as a fundraiser for Kinship-has evolved into a full-day "Frozen Fest" in Perham-including a 5K run in the brisk air and an ice fishing contest.
For those less inclined toward hypothermia, Perham merchants will also be hosting the popular "liquidation sale" the same weekend, for three days, Feb. 5-7.
The centerpiece of the Feb. 6 slate of events is Kinship's "Freezin' for a Reason," where participants will be taking an icy bath in Little Pine Lake-as a fundraiser for the youth mentoring program. Registration for the plunge will begin at 11 a.m., with jumps beginning on the lake near Zorbaz at 1 p.m.
The event is similar to the "Polar Plunge" in Detroit Lakes, which has been hosted for 13 years. "Plungers" will number nearly 200 and the fundraising goal is nearly $60,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs in Detroit Lakes. The event there is slated for Feb. 13.
Those brave enough to "take the plunge" in Perham should contact Jill Shipman at 218-346-1702.
People are urged to buy a raffle ticket for a free entrance to watch "the plunge" live from Zorbaz. With the $20 ticket there will be free beer and pizza from 1:30-3:30 p.m. There is a limited amount of tickets that will be sold. Raffle ticket-holders will be eligible for the following prizes: ice fishing house; a 42" television; and a Shooting Star Casino/Spa Package. Tickets are available for purchase at the Chamber office.
"Freeze Your Face" 5K race part of "Frozen Fest' line-up
Runners are invited to "freeze their faces" February 6 at a 5 kilometer run, headquartered at the Perham Area Community Center. The run will benefit the Perham Yellowjacket cross country team. Registration is at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m.
The race starts behind the PACC and goes through the streets of Perham, finishing at back of the north entrance to the PACC. There will be awards for each age group winner and top three overall finishers. The age groups will be as follows: 13 and under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
Frozen runners will be treated at the end of the run, with caramel rolls at the finish line for all participants. For information, call Angie at 218-298-0806.
First annual "Frozen Fest" ice fishing contest
A family fishing tournament will round out the "Frozen Fest" schedule in Perham for Saturday, Feb. 6. Hosting the contest is the Perham Sportsman's Club.
Registration will start at 8 a.m., and the contest will be from 9 a.m. - noon on Little Pine Lake. For anglers age 12 and under, the cost is $5 per hole. For ages 13 and over, the registration is $10 per hole. For information, call Nick at Gene's Sport Shop, 218-346-3355, or stop in or contact the Chamber for a flyer.
