Letter: Bike or walk to work week a success

On behalf of the Becker, Clay, Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties' Statewide Health Improvement Program, I would like to thank our partner, the City of Perham and everyone who helped make the first annual Bike or Walk to Work Week in Perham a success.

The Perham City Council declared the week of August 23-29 as Bike or Walk to Work Week in order to encourage everyone to integrate physical activity into their daily routine.

In particular, we want to thank Perham ISD 549, which had a significant number of employees biking or walking to work that week. We also appreciate all the support that we received from City staff and officials, including Kelcey Klemm, Chuck Johnson, Dave Neisen, the Park and Recreation Board, and the City Council. Also thank you KPRW and TV3.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of adults in Minnesota do not meet the national recommendations of 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

One of the simplest ways to meet these recommendations is to walk and bike as part of a daily routine. Walking or biking has many health benefits such as: increased energy, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing your risk of chronic disease.

SHIP strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by preventing the chronic disease risk factors of tobacco use and exposure, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. SHIP seeks to create sustainable, systemic changes in schools, worksites, communities and health care organizations that make it easier for Minnesotans to incorporate healthy behaviors into their daily lives.
