Letter: April is National Donate Life Month

Do you know that April is National Donate Life Month (NDLM)? National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was instituted by Donate Life America and its members in 2003. Our guess is that not too many people who are reading this are aware of that fact. My husband and I cer-tainly were not aware of this designation prior to April of 2006, at which time advanced congestive heart failure nearly claimed his life. After a six month medical journey, culminating in a heart trans-plant on October 18, 2006, we became very much aware of the importance of dona-tion.

Here are some statistics concerning organ donation:

-More than 110,000 men, women and children in the US currently need life-saving organ transplants.

-Every 10 minutes another name is added to the list.

-An average of 18 people die each day from the lack of available organs for trans-plant.

-One donor can save or heal up to 60 lives through organ and tissue donations.

-All major religions sup-port organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love and generos-ity toward others.

As a resident of Minne-sota, you should take the fol-lowing steps to ensure your decision to become a donor is carried out:

-Register as a donor on your driver's license, state ID or online at

-Discuss your decision to donate with family and loved ones.

Organ and tissue trans-plants offer patients a new chance at healthy, productive, normal lives and return them to their families, friends and communities. You have the power to change someone's world by being a donor. It's about living. It's about life. LeRoy and I are so very grateful that a young man made the decision to become a donor and that his family carried out those wishes, truly giving LeRoy a second chance for life.
