Near drowning at Menahga beach

Several responded when a juvenile boy began having difficulty swimming on Spirit Lake. He was rescued by lifeguards who brought him to the beach.

A near-drowning was reported in Menahga Friday evening at the Menahga City Beach. Menahga police and Wadena County deputies responded to the city beach on Spirit Lake shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, June 21.

Upon arrival, law enforcement quickly determined that a near-drowning had occurred, according to the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman was swimming at the city beach when a juvenile boy began to have difficulty swimming and was unable to keep his head above water, according to a news release.

Two other juveniles attempted to assist the struggling juvenile to the beach and were quickly overpowered and had to stop rescue efforts and make their way to the safety of the beach.

Calls for help were answered by the lifeguards on duty and emergency responders were called. The juvenile was rescued by lifeguards and brought to the beach.

Witnesses on scene told law enforcement that the boy seemed to be under water for at least 30 seconds before he was rescued by lifeguards.

Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr reminds everyone that is planning on enjoying the warm weather on area lakes to be aware of their swimming abilities and never swim alone and if possible swim where and when a lifeguard is on duty.

Menahga police officers and Wadena County deputies were assisted on scene by the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Menahga First Responders, Tri County Ambulance from Wadena, and North Memorial Ambulance from Park Rapids.

The three juvenile boys were transported by ambulance to Tri County Hospital in Wadena.
