Lightning strikes Rush Lake, cabin damaged by fire

A summer storm that rolled through Otter Tail County included dangerous lightning at 3:42 a.m. on Thursday, July 6.

One result was lightning hitting a cabin at Rush Lake, south of Perham and north of Otter Tail Lake. A fire ensued, with substantial damage to the cabin.

The storm also included heavy rainfall in many parts of Otter Tail County.

Thefts reported at Dent and Long Lake, Vergas

A bank in Dent reported the theft of flower pots from in front of their business.

The items were later recovered on July 5 and the thieves were confronted. The bank did not wish to pursue charges after the thieves apologized and admitted poor decisions.

Sheriff deputies said alcohol was a factor in this case.

In another theft case, sheriff deputies reported that fishing gear was stolen from a black Toyota pickup at the Long Lake public access near Vergas. The incident was reported on July 5.

"Someone broke the rear window of the vehicle and stole the items," said County Sheriff spokesperson Jim Stewart.

The fishing gear value was estimated at $1,400. It will take $460 to repair the window of the vehicle.

Three traffic accidents over the weekend

The sheriff's office, on July 10, reported three traffic accidents over the weekend, but with only minor injuries.

All three of the accidents took place on Saturday, July 8.

The first accident, at 9:15 a.m., took place in Paddock Township in the extreme northeastern section of Otter Tail County.

"One vehicle sideswiped another vehicle," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke. "One person, with minor injuries, was taken to the hospital in Wadena."

The accident took place near the intersection of Highway 75 and 465th Street, just north of Highway 8 that heads west toward Perham. A citation was issued to one person for careless driving.

Another accident involving a motorcycle and deer took place on Highway 20 on the north side of Pelican Lake, north of Pelican Rapids. The driver and rider suffered minor skin abrasions.

The third accident was reported on Highway 83, at 12:56 p.m. and north of Battle Lake. This was a one-vehicle rollover. The driver had cuts to the face.

Thefts reported

A brush guard was taken from the front end of a Chevrolet pickup at Rush Lake on July 8. The value is $4,000.

Items were taken from a storage locker just east of Fergus Falls on July 8, at the intersection of Fir Avenue and Cottonwood Lane.

A battery was stolen from a Bobcat and cables were cut on a trencher unit northeast of Vergas at Rose Lake. Damages were estimated at $170.

Scam report

A resident near Pelican Rapids, at Lizzie Lake, suspects she may have been the victim of a scam. She transacted for a Facebook diet supplement. Later, by phone, she gave out the numbers of a credit card. Deputies were informed on July 7

Deputies called to underage drinking party

Sheriff deputies were called to put an end to an underage drinking party. The location was at Mud Lake on July 7, southwest of Dent and east of Erhard. Several citations were issued.
