Military veterans, family members and friends gathered Wednesday evening, June 27, for the unveiling of the "We leave no man left behind" statue at Underwood Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Honorees, representing all wounded warriors, were Bruce Hanstad and Donald Klaksvik.

The lead person for this project was Ron Shebeck, post historian for the Underwood American Legion.

The statue was constructed in Sioux Falls and transported to Underwood by Shebeck, a long-time leader and volunteer with the Underwood American Legion.

"The soldier, as part of the statue, is seen using the fireman's carry while helping a wounded buddy on the battlefield," Shebeck said.

The Otter Kester and Myrt Trudeau Veterans Memorial Plaza has tributes to those from Underwood who gave their lives during time of war, and to all veterans living and deceased who served in all four branches of the U.S. military.

Shebeck, a retired banker, has preserved many area historic photos that are on display in the lower level of Farmers State Bank.
