Robert Walter Carlson

Robert Walter Carlson, 85, of Akeley, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids.

He was born June 20, 1923 in Minneapolis to Walter H. and Karin M. (Danelius) Carlson. He attended Minneapolis schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific in the Signal Corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946.

He married Phyllis May Hansen on May 25, 1946 in Minneapolis. They lived in Maple Plain for 14 years where he worked as a postal carrier. In 1968 they moved to Akeley where he continued to work as a postal carrier until he retired in 1978.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Akeley. He taught ham radio classes at Camp Courage.

He is survived by his wife; four sons: Robert, Jr. (Mary), of Blaine, Gregory (Linda), of Bemidji, David (DeAnn), of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and John (Ann), of Bemidji; a daughter: Suzanne (Bradley) Benson, of Eden Prairie; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother: Richard (Arlene), of Edina; a sister: Elaine (William) Bennett, of Breckenridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers: His grandsons.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), Jan. 14 at First Lutheran Church in Akeley, with Pastor Paul Knutson officiating. Ken Hager will be the organist. Congregational hymns will be "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "Pass it On," and "Amazing Grace."

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at Assembly Area 4 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
