George Henry McGrane

George Henry McGrane, 86, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Diamond Willow in Park Rapids.

He was born April 18, 1923 in Osage, Carsonville Township, Becker County to John "Jack" and Ella McGrane. He grew up on a farm between Osage and Ponsford and graduated from Park Rapids Area High School in 1941. He farmed with his father and also drove a school bus for Linnell School for 10 years while farming.

He married Barbara Ella Johnson, of Crookston, on June 14, 1945. They lived in Park Rapids most of their married life.

In 1959, he left the farm and took a job at Osage Garage and Hardware owned by Les Enfield. In 1960 he and his brother, Earl, bought the Oldsmobile and Cadillac Garage in Park Rapids, then added Pontiac, Buick and GMC trucks and renamed the business McGrane Motors, Inc. They sold the business in 1980 and retired from full-time work. In their retirement, he and his wife spent some winters in Arizona near his sister, Beverly Olson.

He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids and a long time member of Eagles Club 870 in Park Rapids.

He is survived by two daughters: Corrine (Mark) Lewis, of Eden Prairie, and Rhonda (Garry) Bjorklund, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister, Beverly (Raymond) Olson, of Tucson, Ariz., and sister-in-law, Lottie, of Park Rapids; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004; a brother, Earl, in 2001; a sister, Helen McGrane Myers, in 2006; and two brothers-in-law: Joseph Myers and Raymond "Stream" Olson.

Honorary casket bearers: His friends: Jack Bloomquist, Jerry Willet, Arvin Packer, Don Hinneberg and all of his "coffee gang" friends.

Casket bearers: Mark and Justin Lewis, Garry Bjorklund, Howard and Noah Peterson, David McGrane, Dr. Dean Fox and Larry Grell.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, June 22 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids, with Father Thomas Friedl officiating. Organist will be Barb Fick. Congregational hymns will be "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace." Soloist will be Bill Lundsten, who will sing "Beyond the Sunset" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand."

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and one hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Interment: Linnell Cemetery near Osage.

Memorials preferred to Park Rapids Food Shelf or Detroit Lakes Hospice.
