Bernerd Jerome Rock

Bernerd Jerome Rock, Sr. "miizhikwaad," which means Ray of Sunshine, "gitebwaan," which means Old Time Sioux. The oldest of Wolf Clan "maaingan doodem," 76, of Cass Lake, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at his home.

He was born May 28, 1933 on Star Island, Leech Lake to Wolf Rock and Nancy (Cummings) Rock LaRose.

He was very active in veterans affairs and belonged to the VFW Posts from Bagley, Amvets, Bemidji and Red Lake. He participated in various veterans programs and was a member of MOPH, having received five all together after serving in the Army.

He is survived by his wife, Feather Rock, of Cass Lake; and children: Jolene (Stone) Ajootian, Beryl, Bonnie, Jaqueline Peltier, Bernard, Jr., Byron, Bryan, Brenda (Rock) Burris, Betsy (Haas) Rock, Berton, and Dana (Arndt) Crawford; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and numerous adopted family members.

He was preceded in death by one grandson; two great-grandchildren; five sisters; three brothers; three wives: Geraldine Stone, Lillian Litzau and Louise Bush.

Service: Saturday, July 4 at Bena Community Center.

Casket bearers: Lenny Butcher, Joe Burris, Damian Badboy, Loren French, Clay Crawford, Jage Hunt, Joe Peltier, Lucas French and all his grandchildren.

Interment: Boy River Cemetery in Boy River.
