Bernice Louise Giese

Bernice Louise Giese, 96 of Park Rapids, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids.

She was born Sept. 19, 1912 in Walker to Hans Albert and Birdie Minerva (Ware) Arvig. At age 10 she began to help her dad at the telephone switchboard after school. She attended Nevis High School through grade 11.

She married Carl Frederick Giese in December 1928. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and lived there until 1930 when they moved to the Lake George area. She delivered mail on a rural mail route. They moved to San Diego, Calif. in 1941 where she and her husband worked in a plant, manufacturing war equipment. In 1944 they moved to Morgan Hill, Calif. where she cooked in the forestry industry and worked as a telephone operator. In 1946 they moved to San Jose, Calif. where she worked as a telephone operator and sold real estate. In 1954 they moved to Chester, Calif. where they built and operated a restaurant, lodge, bar and motel complex. In 1956 they sold out to retire and spent the rest of their time between Minnesota and Florida.

She moved to Park Rapids in 1997 where she lived until the last five months when she moved to May Creek Lodge in Walker.

She was a past member of The Eastern Star.

She is survived by one son, Douglas (Nancy), of Osage; three grandsons; three granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Emily Mozzone, of San Jose, Calif., and Ardith Ullman, of San Jose, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons: Carl E. and Byron L.; one brother, Lee Arvig; and one sister, Serona Zimmerman.

Casket bearers: Greg Giese, James and Jim Horton, and Warren Carpenter.

Funeral service: Monday, July 6 at Lake George Bible Chapel at Lake George with Pastor John Weiher officiating.

Interment: Lake George Cemetery.
