John George Glatzmaier

John George Glatzmaier Jr., 80, of Minneapolis, formerly of Park Rapids, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born to John Sr. and Amelia (Dubuque) Glatzmaier Jan. 8, 1929 in Washington. After his mother died in 1938 he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Tony and Mona Glatzmaier on the family farm north of Two Inlets. He attended Park Rapids High School, graduating with the class of 1948.

He lived on the farm until joining the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy for four years, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He served in Europe, Guam and many other parts of the world. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 and returned to the Park Rapids area.

He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids. He lived in various care facilities before settling in at University Good Samaritan Center in Minneapolis.

He is survived by his sisters and brother: Gloria (Frank) Michelizzi, of Duluth, Ann (Bob) Wagner, of Park Rapids, Bart (Nancy), of Park Rapids, and Loralie (Bob) Crep, of Park Rapids.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jerome; and an infant sister, Marie.

Casket bearers: Friends and family.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids with Father Thomas Friedl officiating. Organist will be Joy Horejsi. Special music will be provided by St. Peters Alleluia Choir.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Interment: St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Cemetery in Park Rapids. Military honors will be provided by Star of the North Marine Corp League. Taps will be rendered by Ray Vaadeland.
