Band, orchestra changes planned next year in Perham

Changes in the Perham school music programs are starting to take shape for the 2008-09 school year.

The school's instrumental music program will be operating one person short, as band director Adam Tervola Hultberg resigned and won't be replaced.

Band will be starting in grade 6, rather than grade 5, and will be taught by Larry Wankel.

The changes were outlined by Prairie Wind Middle School Principal Kitty Krueger at the May 21 Perham-Dent school board meeting.

Music appreciation class has been discontinued.

There will be a grade 7-8 band and a separate grade 7-8 orchestra, and they will meet on alternating days.

At the high school level, there will be one symphonic band, combining band and orchestra instruments.

Wankel and orchestra director Kurt Hoesley will both be involved in the combined group. Wankel will be scheduling individual and small group instruction with the band students.
