Treasures on Main opens in Perham

It all started with a coffee shop in Lewistown, Montana.

Darlene's collectable section in the back of the shop was soon burgeoning beyond its limits.

"I kind of just kept collecting things," she explains. Several estate settlements later, she had garnered enough wares to fill her own collectable shop.

And that's just what she did. This past October, Darlene Vannett made the move from Montana back to the state of Minnesota, where she has lived most of her life.

On May 1, she opened Treasures on Main. Filled with her own antiques, collectibles, books, and children's items, the store truly contains something for everyone.

"I sure have a variety," Darlene says of her inventory. "I've got everything from Barbie clothes to fishing items." She has old books, new books, children's books, signs, jewelry, new gift items, furniture, video tapes, appliances, dishes, and more.

It's an assortment so diverse that Darlene was pleased to discover that the sitting area she developed for the husbands of some of her shoppers is almost always vacant. She says she found that even the men enjoy looking around in her shop.

Treasures on Main includes five rooms with different items featured in each room. There is even a "bargain kitchen," complete with a large selection of $1 items. "I try to keep my prices down," comments Darlene.

One special section of the shop is dedicated solely to Disney memorabilia. A host of large Disney dolls are on display, along with other collectable Disney merchandise.

According to Darlene, some of her most popular items are her glassware and linens. She credits this to the fact that her prices are more reasonable than what people might find in the average antique store.

Her most unique item? A unit featuring 105 drawers made out of individual oil cans. The piece is one-of-a-kind, made by a rancher in Montana. "He welded and hammered out each drawer," Darlene explains.

Darlene has four adult children living in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Montana; along with 10 grandchildren. Her mother and sister live in the Perham area, with her mom often coming into the shop to help her out in the mornings.

Treasures on Main is located at 534 East Main Street in Perham. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., from May through October.
