Joint choir-symphony concert at St. Henry's Oct. 27

The Perham-Dent High School choirs and symphony will present their first concert of the school year next Monday, October 27.

It will be held at 7:30 at St. Henry's Catholic Church.

The choirs, under the direction of Kevin Kosiak, will open the concert with the Varsity Choir performing three songs: Sing Dem Herrn, by Michael Praetorius; Song of the Sea, by Raymond Hannisian; and Song for the Mira, a Canadian folksong arranged by Stuart Calvert. Concert Choir will follow with three pieces as well: If Ye Love Me, a renaissance motet by Thomas Tallis; Ye Followers of the Lamb, by Edwin Ferguson; and You Raise Me Up, arranged by Teena Chinn.

The symphony, directed by Kurt Hoesly, will perform music with a "spooky" theme. Although the title might not ring a bell, "Funeral March of a Marionette" will be familiar to fans of Alfred Hitchcock. The symphony will also perform the "March to the Scaffold" from Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. The strings will play a piece entitled "Waltz of the Wicked" and the band will be featured with music from "Also Sprach Zarathustra" - more widely recognized from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The choirs and instrumentalists will also combine forces for two selections. The spiritual "He Never Failed Me Yet" will feature vocal soloists and the brass and saxophone players. The strings, trumpets, and choirs will perform the opening movement from Vivaldi's Gloria.
