Murder in the ice-fishing shanties

Local author Ernest Schanilec, longtime Vergas-area resident, has written another mystery with a distinctive, East Otter Tail lake country connection.

Vergas author Ernest Schanilec has recently released "Ice Lord," his newest book in the Hastings Series.

The book was released in early December, and is available in Perham at Bev's Book Nook.

"Ice Lord" sets Tom Hastings up against a killer who haunts the fishing houses on Border's Lake. According to Schanilec, "Border's Lake" is based on Rose Lake, located by his house.

The photo on the cover of "Ice Lord" features a snowy Rose Lake, complete with several fishing houses.

After spotting the first burning house from his back deck, Hastings is sucked into a world of vengeance, greed, thieving thugs, wisecracking bullies, and two women who want his love.

He's also joined by Hastings Series favorites: Henry, the small town café philosopher, the beautiful Julie, and the irrepressible Izzy Felton who asked the troubling question, "What was that foreign object jammed into the fishing house's heating vent?"

Ernest Francis Schanilec was born in the Red River Valley of North Dakota in the 1930's. He attended the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota where he earned a doctoral degree.

"Ice Lord" is his ninth novel, following his Hastings Series--"Blue Darkness," "The Towers," "Danger in the Keys," "Purgatory Curve," "Gray Riders," "Sleep Six," "Night Out in Fargo," and "Gray Riders II."
