Evaluation ordered for man after Wilkin County standoff

A Kent, Minn., man will undergo a mental health evaluation after arming himself with 500 rounds of ammunition and engaging in a five and a half hour standoff with law enforcement officers Sunday afternoon near his parents' Wilkin County home.

Jonathan August Stuehrenberg, 19, is at St. Francis Health Care in Breckenridge, Minn., while an evaluation is being arranged.

According to a news release from the Wilkin County Sheriff's Department, Stuehrenberg left his parents' residence about five miles southeast of Kent at 10:54 a.m. Sunday after a disagreement.

His father, Duane Stuehrenberg, reported that his son had armed himself with a scoped rifle, approximately 500 rounds of ammunition, several large knives and pieces of outdoor survival gear. Jonathan Stuehrenberg also told his father he didn't care if he died and would fight or harm law enforcement officers if they tried to interfere.

When a Wilkin deputy, Minnesota state trooper and Minnesota Conservation officer arrived on the scene, they found the young man had stationed himself in a tree line about a half-mile from his parents' home and was digging and making a shelter. When an officer tried to approach Stuehrenberg on snowmobile, the young man pointed a weapon at him. Several times throughout the standoff, Stuehrenberg pointed his rifle at officers, although he never fired the weapon, according to the news release.

Stuehrenberg also did not respond to officers' attempts to communicate with him via public address system.

Wilkin County Sheriff Tho-as Matejka arrived on the scene and requested that the Otter Tail Tri-County SWAT team be activated. At Matejka's request, the Minnesota National Guard also dispatched a tracked vehicle and personnel to the scene.

About 4:30 p.m., members of the SWAT team, using the tracked vehicle, approached Stuehrenberg's location. The young man was taken into custody at 4:48 p.m. without incident.

Wilkin County law enforcement would not comment on whether any charges are pending.
