Eagles send four to state wrestling tournament
Four New York Mills wrestlers reached the finals at the Section 6A Individual Wrestling Tournament Saturday and qualified for the state wrestling tournament to be held next week in St. Paul. The Eagles had two section champions and two runners-up at the tournament in New York Mills.
Earning titles were Myrone Bell at 125 pounds and 135-pounder Jordan Novak. Shane Novak, 103 pounds; and Landyn Saewert, 285 pounds, placed second.
Shane Novak defeated Mitch Steffens 2-1 in the semifinals, then lost to top seed Mitch Andrews of Border West, 6-3 in the finals.
Myrone Bell won 16-3 over Seth Felland of West Central Area in the semifinals. Bell won the section title with a 10-4 decision over Allin Bakken of Pelican Rapids. Bell had lost twice to Bakken in their previous matches this season.
Number one seed Jordan Novak defeated Taylor Bendson of Staples-Motley, 19-9, in the semifinals, before beating Ryan Sibernick of Parkers Prairie, 11-4, in the finals.
Landyn Saewert knocked off top-seed Jake Fiedler of Parkers Prairie, 3-2, in the semifinals, then was pinned in the finals by Colin Turchin of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale in 41 seconds. Saewert then had to wrestle a true second match, where he defeated #2 seed Reece Hanson of Border West, 11-5.
The first round of individual competition at the state tournament will be Wednesday, 6 p.m., at the Xcel Center in St. Paul.
