PHS Girls Basketball: Perham to meet EGF in 8AA West Finals

After one of the most successful regular season's in school history, the Perham girls basketball team began their postseason run last week with a 86-51 win over Pelican Rapids at Prairie Wind Gymnasium.

The Vikings came out strong, hitting their first five shots. But Perham was able to slow them down and had a 55-37 lead at the half.

Elisa Moenkedick led Perham with 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Tara Sailer added 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and handed out seven assists. Steph Miller had a solid all-around night with seven points, eight boards, six assists and four steals, and Katrina Moenkedick finished the night with 17 points.

The Jackets offense was unstoppable. Perham hit 30 out of 40 shots from inside the 3-point arc (75 percent). The were 68 percent overall from the field (34-for-50).

The Jackets (26-1)are coming off their first Heart O' Lakes Conference title since 1991 with a perfect 18-0 record. They had beat their HOL rivals Pelican Rapids twice during the season, 69-52 on Jan. 15, and 75-51 in thee season opener on Dec. 2, 75-51. Perham now has a nine-game winning streak against Pelican Rapids. The Vikings last win in the rivalry was a 37-34 overtime victory on Jan. 18, 2005.

Jackets down W-DC

The Yellowjackets extended another win-streak on Saturday in the 8AA West semifinals. They beat Wadena-Deer Creek for the sixth-straight time with a 65-47 win.

Perham wasn't quite as hot from the floor on Saturday, but they still shot an impressive 51.2 percent (22-for-43). That was good enough to help them to a 34-25 halftime lead.

The Lady Jackets turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding W-DC to 7-for-27 shooting (25.9 percent). The Wolveriens shot just 29.3 percent for the game (17-for-58).

Katrina Moenkedick led a balanced attack with 14 points. Elisa Moenkedick and Miller each added 12 with Kaylan Huber putting in 10.

The Wolverines last win in the rivalry came in the 2002-03 season. Perham had beaten W-DC earlier this year on Feb. 5, 57-45. The Wolverines had advanced past the first round with a 60-54 win over D-G-F on Thursday.

Sub-Section Finals postponed

The 8AA West Sub-Section Finals between Perham and No. 2 ranked East Grand Forks (26-2) was moved from Tuesday, March 10 to Wednesday, March 11. The game will tip-off at 8 p.m. at Concordia College. Watch for coverage this week at

The winner will move on to the 8AA Finals at Concordia on Friday, March 13 at 8 p.m. against the East champion. In the East Sub-Section Finals, No. 3 Pine River-Backus and No. 4 Crosby-Ironton played Wednesday night at Bemidji State University.
