LETTER TO THE EDITOR: NY Mills wrestling tourney discriminates

To the editor:

I am writing this letter in complaints to the New York Mills Youth Open Wrestling Tournament that was on Friday, March 20, 2009. My 5-year-old daughter weighed in at 43 pounds and was getting ready for the tournament to start and I was approached by a lady that was running the brackets and she informed me that my daughter was unable to be bracketed with the boys and was bracketed with one other little girl at 10 pounds heavier than herself. My husband then went to talk to head coach Eric Niemi and he asked him why she could not wrestle with the boys and he stated that those are their rules and that it is posted on their flyer, and that a lot of tournaments are not allowing boys and girls to wrestle each other.

Well, we have been to many other tournaments and have never had a problem. That is not my point. My point is that it is sexist and very discriminating towards girls. The little girl that was 10 pounds heavier than mine is from the New York Mills elementary program. Now, tell me how that little girl practices on that team when boys and girls are not allowed to wrestle each other. In the end we got our money back for our children, and we and many other Bertha-Hewitt families will no longer be attending NYM elementary wrestling tournaments.
