New local firm wins Perham city contract
A new Perham firm, specializing in locating gas and telecommunications lines at construction sites, was awarded the city's locating contract.
Precision Locating, which started two months ago, has also secured a long term contract with Arvig Communication Systems. The firm will handle the underground locates for ACS service territories ranging from Osakis to the Leech Lake area.
Representing Precision Locating at the April 13 Perham City Council meeting were Andy Klinnert and John Schornack. Klinnert said the firm expects to employ five.
The basic bid from Precision, with locate fees ranging from $10.50 to $17.50 for each locate, was comparable to the city's previous firm, Citi Lights. But city manager Kelcey Klemm analyzed previous history and concluded that Precision would be lower priced because of its overlap area with ACS.
If coupled with other locates, such as ACS telecommunications lines, the city will pay less, said Klemm.
The city's natural gas company extends beyond city limits, and serves numerous township and lakeshore neighborhoods in East Otter Tail--which are also served by ACS.
Based on the price, and the fact that Precision Locating is a local firm, Councilman Jim Johnson made a motion to award Precision Locating the three-year contract with the city and the Natural Gas Company.
Though the locators with Precision do not have experience with natural gas lines, the locate staff will receive the necessary training following the approval of the city contract, said Klinnert.
